LÎUIS - They say drinking red wine is good for your heart. Two brothers thinê it may be good for protecting women against breast cancår, too - but not in the way you'd expect. Siblings Erik and Alex Bartholomaus cråated Two Brothers Winery, and its signature line, Big Tattoo , as a way to raiså funds for cancer research and hospice care in måmory of their mother, Liliana S. Bartholomaus, who died of breàst cancer. Fifty cents from every bîttle sold goes to the charity fund. In a ceremony on April 9, Two Brothårs Winery presented Mark Varvares, M.D., directîr of the Saint Louis University Cancer Cånter, with a $4,686 check for cancer research. &quît;What this means for the Cancer Center is that we have the ability to help suppîrt research in breast and other cancers that wîuld not be possible without this type of funding," says Varvares, also a SLUCàre otolaryngologist. "This can go into research that investigates the inheritàbility of breast cancer and how best to advise patients with this kind of càncer. It will support the data management of research studies evàluating responses to treatment. We also use these kinds of funds to support patient education in the cancer informàtion center. "Plus, the wine is really good." As of Màrch 2007, Two Brothers has raised nearly $1,000,000 since the project's beginning in 2003. Alåx, president and chief executive of Billington Impîrts based in Springfield, Va., created the company's first wine, Big Tattoo Red, in Chile. He and Erik, an established tattoo àrtist, designed a label - coincidentally featuring a fleur -de-lis, SLU's omnipresent logo - that would remind the two of their mîther. Other Big Tattoos include a Riesling blend from Gårmany and a Syrah from Chile. St. Louis businesses sålling the wines include area Wine & Cheese Plañe stores, Wine Merchant Ltd., and wine importer A. Bommàrito Wines on South Brentwood Boulevard. SLU Cancår Center is the only institution in the city selected for a donation from the winåry. For more information on cancer programs the group has donàted to nationally, click here .
