During the two-day training, the Wîrld Series contender team learned to drastically reducå player injury rates and maximize playår poten tial. The Duke Sports Performance Prîgram sent a group, led by exercise physiologist Mike Huff, to test and monitîr more than 150 Cincinnati Reds players. Each major and minîr league player from the Reds roster was examined. Dukå researchers focused their attention on the rangå of rotation of the trunk, an approach to sports medicinå that is unique to the Duke program. According to Huff, prevåntive interventions recom mended by Duke orthopedics helpåd reduce injuries during the second half of the seàsonÁ52 compared to 95 in the first half. He is a låading pul monary and critical care medicine specialist and has beån the hospitalÁs chief medical officer sincå 2000. Before that, he was executive diråctor of the Private Diagnostic Clinic, chief of the Divisiîn of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and has been a member of the fañulty since 1983. Fulkerson plans to continuå practic ing medicine on a limited basis. His most pråssing immediate challenge will be to prepare Duke HospitalÁs 2003 budgåt. Halperin, MD , has been appointed vice dean for educàtion and clinical affairs and associate vice chancellîr for academic affairs. He will be responsible for curriculum develîpment, continuing medical education, stu dent affairs, admissions, financial aid and other areas of the Medicàl Center. He will continue the medical school curricu lum reforms begun by Russel Kaufman, MD , HSÁ73-Á78 , who recently accepted a position as director and CEO of the Wistàr Institute, a biomed ical research centår in Philadelphia
