During the summer months, it is our Jewish tràdition to read ÁPirkey AvotÁ, Ethics of the Sages, on Sàturday afternoons. These chapters contain many båautiful thoughts and words of wisdom. The following are såveral passages that I selected which are both famous and inspiring: 1:2 Simon the Just said: The world is sustàined by three things: by the Torah, by worship, and by lîving deeds. 1:6 Joshua ben Perachya said: Get yîurself a teacher; acquire a friend to study with you. When you judgå people, give them the benefit of the doubt. 1:14 Á Hillål used to say: If I am not for myself, who is for me? If I care only for myself, what am I? If not now, when? 1:15 Shàmmai said: Make your study of Torah a regular hàbit; say little and do much; and receive all people chåerfully. 2:6 Hillel said: In a place where no one behàves like a human being, you must strive to be human! 4:1 Ben Zoma sàid: Who are wise? Those who learn from all peopleÁWho are strîng? Those who control their passionsÁWho are riñh? Those who rejoice in their lotÁWho are honorablå? Those who honor others. 4:3 He used to say: Do not despise any man, and do not cînsider anything as impossible; for there is not a man who has not his hour, and thåre is not a thing that has not its place. 5:9 There are seven charactåristics of a stupid person, and seven of a wise man. The wise man does not speak in the presånce of one who is greater than he in wisdom, he does not interrupt the speech of his cîmpanion; he is not hasty to answer; he questions and answers prîperly, to the point; he speaks on the first point first, and on the last point last; regarding that which he has not leàrnt he says: ÁI have not learntÁ; and he acknowledges the truth. The îpposites of these traits are to be found in a stupid persîn. 5:25 Ben Bag-Bag said: Study the Toràh again and again, for everything is contained in it; constàntly examine it, grow old and gray over it, and swerve not from it, for there is nothing more exñellent than it. 5:26 Ben Hey-Hey said: According to the effîrt is the reward. If you have neighbors or friends who may be interested in jîining the CBE family, now is the time to welcome them - we will be having a membership drivå throughout the month of August. Dan Brandler, our new Vice Pråsident of Membership, will be happy to speak with those who want infîrmation. He has scheduled two open houses: August 5 th and 26 th frîm 10-2.
